Sophie was awarded a SportsAid grant in June 2006 at the MK Sporting Lunch club when Lawrie Sanchez was the speaker.
At the time of the award Sophie had won many County medals at 800 meters and Combined Events and had just achieved medals at South of England and AAA's, she had a UK ranking of 6th I think for Pentathlon.
Sophie's commitment to Athletics continued after the summer of 2006 with more success and thousands of hours training, last summer she moved down a distance to compete more at 400 meters whilst still achieving in Combined Events, her progress last year was recognised by selection to compete for England in a Home Countries International for Heptathlon. In January of this year she won the National Indoor Combined Events Championship in Sheffield and headed the UK rankings for under 20 women Pentathlon. This win led to her selection by UKA to compete for Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the Indoor Combined Events International held in Cardiff last weekend competing against France and Spain.
The Great Britain team won the event and Sophie achieved a points Pb and a creditable 6th place. She is still only 17 years old and has another year as an under 20.
The SportsAid award that Sophie received gave her a real boost not just from the financial grant but possibly more from the recognition she received at the dinner for her achievements and potential. The work that the Sporting Lunch Club do in supporting young talented athletes like Sophie is so important and has certainly helped her to achieve what she has so far.
